HEIC and WebP are different problems—use the right tool

Two “won’t open” formats get mixed up constantly. WebP usually comes from websites and social saves. HEIC/HEIF usually comes from iPhone (and some Android) camera rolls. They need different converters.
Quick identification
Check the extension: .webp points to web delivery; .heic / .heif points to device capture (Apple’s default for many years). Finder/Explorer type columns help when names are messy.
Context also matters. “I saved this from Chrome” → suspect WebP. “I AirDropped a photo from my iPhone” → suspect HEIC. Wrong tool wastes time and looks like the site is broken.
